What’s the difference between version control and audit trails?

Version control tracks changes to a document’s content ensuring only the current approved version is in active use. An audit trail tracks actions taken on a document who accessed, modified, or approved it, and when. Compliance typically requires both: knowing what the document says now, and being able to prove who did what to get it there.
